Thin film morphology of a new type of complex fluid — •Stefan Schlagowski, Ralf Seemann, Karin Jacobs, Stephan Herminghaus und Axel Busch — Abteilung Angewandte Physik, Universität Ulm, 89069 Ulm

We have studied the morphological changes and the dewetting behavior of thin films of surfactant encapsulated clusters (SEC) [1] on silicon substrates upon annealing.

These SEC consist of Molybdenium oxide clusters covered by a surfactant (DODA) forming spherical particles of diameter 3.5 nm. The interparticle interactions are expected to be purely of hard core/ van der Waals type and are in the order of thermal energies. This allows us to study a ßimple" solid resp. liquid whith constituent particles of a size accessible by e.g. atomic force microscopy.

Thin films of thicknesses between 10-500 nm can easily be prepared from SEC-solutions. Observations show how the initially smooth film forms polygonal terraces of monolayer height and small filaments that resemble domain borders after annealing at 180 C for several minutes. Further annealing leads to dewetting of the film.
