Vibrated granular systems in containers display convective instabilities above a threshold which is velocity dependent. In the 2D numerical results we present, we analyze density, temperature and velocity fields obtained after 1,000 cycles of averaging the motion of 10,000 particles under vertical and horizontal shaking in the fully convective regime. The hydrodynamic fields, collected in computer generated movies, are resolved in time (100 frames per cycle) and reveal very interesting details of the collective dynamics of vibrated granular matter, among these the propagation of shock waves.
