Stochastic resonance in a three state system — •Jan A. Freund, Neven Dolos, Benjamin Lindner, and Lutz Schimansky-Geier — Institut für Physik, Humboldt-Universität, Invalidenstr. 110, 10115 Berlin, GERMANY

As a generalization of the two state models usually considered in research on stochastic resonance (SR) we present here results for a three state system. In the context of neuron dynamics the three states correspond to the quiescent, excited and refractory states. Unidirectional transitions between the states are governed by rate equations. An external harmonic stimulus modulates the transition rate from the quiescent to the firing state. The asymptotic evolution of probabilities can be solved analytically. A peak in the spectral power amplification, a standard measure for SR, can be derived from the solution. Analytic results are compared with numerical simulations and with realistic neuron models.
