By studying the diffusive motion of localized perturbations within a stationary region of a driven many-particle system with stochastic dynamics we obtain a simple criterion for the stability of shock fronts [1]. It turns out that depending on the macroscopic current-density relation single shocks may branch into two distinct shocks [2].
