Cantilever-Magnetometry on Two-Dimensional Electron Systems — •Markku Schwarz, Dirk Grundler, Christian Heyn, and Detlef Heitmann — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstr. 11, 20355 Hamburg

We present magnetization-measurements on a two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Using micromechanical cantilever magnetometers with an integrated 2DES we have investigated the equilibrium magnetization as well as the effect of non-equilibrium eddy-currents. The cantilever-devices were fabricated by lithography and selective etching. The etch-stop layers and the AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure were inserted by molecular beam epitaxy. We reach a sensitivity of 10−13 J/T, which enables us to study the deHaas-vanAlphen-effect in a 2DES of only 0.04 cm2 area. In the vicinity of filling factors with vanishing longitudinal resistance a sweeping magnetic field induces non-equilibrium currents. The breakdown of the quantum Hall effect limits the strengths of these quasi-persistent currents.
