During the last years, spin electronics has been one of the fastest growing fields in physics leading to new device ideas such as spin transistors, spin memory devices, spin opto-electronics, or even spin quantum computers. Most essential requirements of such semiconductor devices which rely on the electron spin orientation are spin injection, spin transport, and the electron and hole spin dynamics. We study these processes by optical means, demonstrate a most efficient spin injection using diluted magnetic semiconductors, show the conservation of the electron spin orientation during transport in high electric fields, discuss problems concerning spin dephasing, and prove the feasibility of spin opto-electronics.
