Intra-conduction band absorption of interacting electrons in disordered quantum wells — •N. Riemann, C. Metzner, and G.H. Döhler — Universität Erlangen, Technische Physik I, Erwin-Rommel-Strasse 1
Electron wave functions become in-plane localized in doped quantum wells by the strong potential fluctuations. We investigate theoretically the linear optical response of such a disordered electron system on the basis of realistic localized quantum states. For the first time, non-linear static screening effects and dynamic electron-electron interactions are included on the level of a density functional approximation. As a function of carrier density, we calculate the (inter- and intra-subband) absorption spectrum for light polarized perpendicular and parallel to the layers. While the static screening alone is not very effective in the strong disorder regime, the dynamic many-particle interactions cause a dramatic line narrowing and absorption peak shift. This behavior is qualitatively different for the two polarization directions.
