Luttinger liquid behavior in quantum wires: theory. — •Maura Sassetti — Dipartimento di Fisica, INFM, Via Dodecaneso 33, 16146 Genova, Italy.
An overview of the present understanding of the physics of correlated electrons in quantum wires is presented. The low energy excitations, the linear and non-linear transport properties are treated within the Luttinger liquid model. Several theoretical predictions of Luttinger behavior so far proposed are outlined. In particular, collective charge and spin density excitations are considered and the influence of the Coulomb interaction on their behavior is compared with recent resonant Raman data. The conductance of a quantum wire is calculated. The renormalization of the plateau values and the corresponding temperature behaviors are derived. The interplay between interaction, backscattering by impurities and random inhomogeneities is considered and discussed in the light of recent experiments. Finally a more general overview on theoretical results on frequency dependent transport is given.
