Application of three dimensional photonic crystals extends possibilities to control and modify spontaneous emission. Due to the small feature size the 3D photonic crystals are difficult to fabricate. Alternatively, self-assembled colloids, like opals, offer an prospective way to study the photonic bandgap effect in true 3D photonic crystals. We have used opals as templates to prepare dye/polymer opal composites and their inverse replicas which differ in the refractive index contrast and topology. The emission of laser dyes incorporated in the polymer has been studied by laser excited luminescence to determine the PBG effect upon the emission spectrum. Among other changes of the dye emission in the photonic bandgap environment the self-focusing phenomenon has been observed and modelled theoretically. This effect is a sort of superprism effect, which relates to the particular configuration of dispersion planes in an opal at wavelength range of the stop-band.
