Metal/oxide nanocomposite materials with potential application as sensors, in catalysis and optoelectronics should exhibit uniform coverage by metal particles of controlled size, high surface density and stable dispersion. As an approach to this issue we explored the capabilities of direct synthesis on hydride modified silica from coordination compounds. We investigated the dispersion behaviour of a variety of metal particles (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt). The conditions of synthesis and processing, e.g. silica dehydroxylation, protolysis, reduction, and particle formation influence considerably the surface density, mean size, size distribution and anchoring strength of the particles. No clear differences were observed between the metals which points to the role of the particular reaction in the formation of the metal seeds.
