Methanol Catalysis from CO2 and H2 investigated by Raman spectroscopy — •Christian Siemes, Alexandre Goussev, and Andreas Otto — Lehrstuhl fuer Oberflaechenwissenschaft (IPkM), Heinrich-Heine-Universitaet-Duesseldorf, 40225 Duesseldorf

We have studied in-situ the reaction of a gas mixture of CO2 and H2 (1:1) at a total pressure of 400 Torr over a copper island film using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The sample was heated (∼ 0.75 K/min) from room temperature to 410 K at a constant background pressure. Raman signals from graphitic carbon, which has been on the surface before the heating, were found to disappear at a temperature of 370 K. At the same temperature we observed the formation of formate (HCOO). Besides formate we found other catalytic relevant intermediates e. g. carbonate (CO3) to remain stable on the surface at room temperature after the reaction.
