X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study of ternary magnetic chalcogenide semiconductors — •Mihaela Demeter1, Stefan Plogmann1, Manfred Neumann1, and Vladimir Tsurkan2 — 1Universität Osnabrück, Fachbereich Physik, Deutschland — 2Institute of Applied Physics, Academy of Sciences, Chisinau, Moldova
Although the basic properties of many magnetic semiconductors
have been previously studied, little information about the local
magnetic properties, especially about the valence states and the
spin configurations of the ions in single crystalline samples, is
available. We present here a study of the Mn, Fe and Cr 3s and
Cr 2p levels for the ternary magnetic sulphides A1Cr2S4
(A1= Fe, Mn, Zn) and selenides A2Cr2Se4 (A2= Cd,
Hg, Cu) single crystals, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
From the magnitude of the exchange splitting of the Cr, Fe and Mn
3s core levels, the electronic configuration of these ions were
deduced to be 3d3, 3d6 and 3d5, respectively. A well
resolved splitting of the Cr 2p levels was observed in all
investigated compounds.
