Scattering of evanescent waves by arrays of latex spheres — •Andreas Pack, M. Hietschold, and R. Wannemacher — Institut fuer Physik, Universitaet Chemnitz, D-09107 Chemnitz
We have studied numerically the scattering of evanescent waves by arrays of dielectric spheres as a function of the wavelength of the incident wave. Including multiple scattering at the surface we find strong local intensity enhancements, which are controllable, to some degree, by the wavelength. This allows in principle optical addressing of individual particles. Close to morphological resonances of single particles chains of particles scatter predominantly from their ends back into the prism, which serves to generate the evanescent field by total internal reflection. We also find highly directional emission into free space.
