Results of ab initio and semi-empirical studies of the energetics and strains of heterogeneous systems consisting of adatoms and small clusters on metal surfaces are presented. We concentrate on the Co/Cu(001) system. Intermixing on the surface and the cluster formation are investigated. The interaction of small Co clusters with their substrates leads to unexpected strain distribution in the surface. The strain in the surface region near islands vary strongly on an atomic scale. The effect of the size and the shape of clusters on the strain relief is discussed. The diffusion on the top of strained islands and the edge diffusion are considered.
