Martensitic Transformations Studied on Nano- and Microscopic Length Scales — •D. Schryvers — EMAT, University of Antwerp (RUCA), Groenenborgerlaan 171, B-2020 Antwerp, Belgium
This contribution will focus on recent results of transmission electron microscopy studies on alloys undergoing a martensitic transformation such as Ni-Al, Ni-Mn, Ni-Ti and their ternary systems. The emphasis will be on details at different length scales between the atomic and microscopic level.
In Ni-Al different types of local lattice deformations at the vicinity of habit planes and macrotwin planes between two martensite plates observed in HRTEM will be described and discussed in view of the dynamics of the transformation and its relation with symmetry changing elements. The effects of nanoscale composition fluctuations on the microstructure in Ni-Al melt-spun ribbons will be discussed based on HRTEM, EELS and EDX measurements. The microstructure of new melt-spun Ni-Ti-Cu films will also be presented in view of its relation with the martensitic transformation.
