Charge–carrier dynamics in single wall carbon carbon nanotubes studied with time–resolved photoemission — •Tobias Hertel and Gunnar Moos — Fritz-Haber-Institut der MPG, Faradyweg 4-6, D–14195 Berlin

We have studied the charge carrier dynamics in single wall carbon nanotubes using femotsecond time–resolved photoemission. In these experiments the electron distribution in the sample is initially perturbed by a visible femtosecond laser pulse and the resulting charge carrier dynamics are probed using the photoemission signal from a second time–delayed UV–laser pulse. This allowed us to study the dynamics of excited electrons over a wide energy range from -0.1 eV up to 2.3 eV with respect to the Fermi level. We analyze the contribution of electron–electron and electron–phonon interactions to the non–equilibrium carrier dynamics and discuss the implications for the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes. We were able to determine the strength of the dominant e-ph martix element and the corresponding e-ph scattering channel which is attributed to back–scattering from longitudinal acoustic phonons.
