There are several procedures to synthesize single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT). This talk will give a short review on preparation methods. Some of these methods are used at the IFW in Dresden. Further it will be demonstrated that the electronic properties of CNT exhibit typical one-dimensional behavior, in agreement with the classification of CNT as molecular quantum wires. Moreover, the optical excitations of single-walled CNT permit a simple characterization of macroscopic CNT samples.
