Resonant Raman scattering is an excellent tool to characterize single-walled carbon nanotubes with respect to their diameter, metallicity, and helicity. After a short introduction this talk will demonstrate that scattering from the radial breathing mode (RBM) is especially suited for such an analysis. Contrary to original expectations, the analysis shows that the Raman response corresponds to a quasi-continuous distribution of tube diameters, in which all tubes geometrically allowed in the relevant diameter region follow a Gauss distribution. In agreement with calculated spectra the photoselective resonance exhibits an oscillatory behavior in frequency and intensity. The interaction between the tubes in a rope leads to a stiffening which was found to amount to 8.5% of the frequency of the RBM.
