We investigate the transport properties of
correlated electrons
in a one-dimensional “leaky” electron waveguide.
Over a finite length L the wire is separated from a coplanar
two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by a thin sidewall of the
confining potential.
Therefore
the 1D electrons can leak out through the
thin side
barrier into the 2DEG.
Treating the 1D electrons within the Luttinger liquid model,
we evaluate the current flowing through the waveguide,
as well as the tunneling current.
Our results allow us to relate fundamental properties of the
1D correlated electron system, such as the density
of states [1], to quantities that can be
measured by transport experiments.
Such a device has already been experimentally
realized in a semiconductor heterostructure
by use of split-gate techniques [2].
