Superconducting fault current limiter: A Novel device for improved power quality — •X. Obradors, T. Puig, and X. Granados — Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, C.S.I.C. Campus U.A. Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain

Electricity producers, distributors and consumers have a very strong interest in developing devices allowing to limit short-circuit currents in the network in order to effectively protect power systems and securing electrical networks. The use of high temperature superconducting materials for fault current limitation appears very attractive because they have a high commutation power, the switching time is much faster than circuit breakers and they are self restoring. In this talk we will review the different strategies for the design of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (resistive, inductive or hybrid) and also the performances of the different classes of superconducting materials which are being considered as active elements for these power devices (thin film and bulk YBCO or bulk BSCCO). The advantages and drawbacks of the different alternatives from the point of view of quench behavior, processing cost and materials reliability will be pointed out.
