Enhancement of the resistivity of a normal metal in contact with a superconductor — •M. Endres, M. Kulić, and D. Rainer — Universität Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth
Recent measurements of the resistivity of a normal metal (Cu) in contact with a type I superconductor (Sn) have shown an increase of the resistance of Cu by ≈ 60% when Sn is switched to its superconducting state by reducing the temperature [1]. In order to interprete these data we calculate the resistance of a N-S strip junction probed by two small contacts on the normal metal. Of interest is the dependence of the resistance on the position of the contacts, in particular on their distance form the N-S boundary. The anomalous resistance is interpreted as a consequence of Andreev reflection at the N-S boundary which leads to an increased cross section of impurities in the normal metal.
