Studies on Mass–selected Iron Clusters Deposited into a Silver Matrix — •R.–P. Methling, V. Senz, Th. Diederich, J. Tiggesbäumker, J. Bansmann, and K.–H. Meiwes–Broer — Fachbereich Physik, Universität Rostock, 18051 Rostock

Using a new developed continously working cluster source (Arc Cluster Ion Source - ACIS) we codeposit mass–selected iron clusters into a matrix of evaporated silver atoms on a silicon substrate. The source is based on cathodic arc erosion in inert gas environment and supersonic expansion. Its intensity and stability allows an enhanced mass–separation which is achieved by means of an electrostatic quadrupole deflector. Setting the resolution to mm ≈ 10 yields cluster ion currents of several hundred pA over a broad mass range (FeN, N ≈ 102 − 106). After deposition the structural and the magnetic properties are investigated.
