Multisequential photodissociation of size selected noble metal clusters — •Maria Dolores Herraiz Lablanca, Alexander Herlert, Lutz Schweikhard, and Manuel Vogel — Inst. f. Physik, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, D-55099 Mainz, Germany
Singly charged noble metal clusters in the size range between 20 and 100 atoms are produced by a laser cluster source and transfered into a Penning trap where they are captured and stored. After size selection the clusters are photoexcited. Multiphotoabsorption leads to multiple dissociation. The charged dissociation products are analysed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. This procedure results in abundance spectra of the fragment cluster ions, where the relative signal intensities as a function of cluster size represent the associated stability, i.e. they yield information about the respective dissociation energies. Most notably, silver cluster cations show prominent signals for cluster consisting of 49, 55 and 59 atoms, which corresponds to earlier findings (S. Krückeberg et al., Eur. Phys. J. D 9 (1999) 169) on multiply charged silver clusters.
