In this work we treat inelastic scattering of fast electrons on metal clusters in the range of transferred energies above the ionization threshold.
In order to perform the analyses of the role of collective electron excitations in the formation of inelastic scattering cross section, we have described the electron impact ionization process in plasmon resonance approximation [1,2]. The cross section expressed via the variation of the electron density of the cluster under action of the external electric field of the projectile electron. The variation of the electron density has been obtained from the solution of the hydrodynamic Euler equation.
We have demonstrated that in this energy range many-electron collective excitations, namely, the volume plasmons, provide dominating contribution to the differential cross section resulting in its resonance behaviour.
