We present CONETRAP, a compact fully electrostatic ion storage device consisting of only three electrodes: two conical and one central cylindrical. This simple setup works as two focusing electrostatic mirrors confining externally produced fast ions in closed orbits [1,2]. We present the design and show experimental results demonstrating two qualitatively different ion-storage modes [2]. In one mode the ion paths are similar to those of photons inside an optical resonator, whereas another mode is found where the ions are spending more than 90 % of the time inside the conical cavities of the end electrodes. Further the influence on the storage lifetime of the residual gas pressure and of the ion intensity has been investigated. We hope to be able to present our first results of lifetime measurements of metastable negative ions at the conference. 1mm [1] A. Fardi, H. Cederquist and H.T.
