A novel method will be presented which facilitates the precise determination of excitation energies. The main idea is to extrapolate the energies of individual dielectronic recombination (DR) Rydberg-resonances to the associated series limit. Measurements of the 1s22p1/2 nj (n ≥ 20) resonance manifolds for the DR of the Li-like ions Au76+, Pb79+ and U89+ will be presented. Results for the 2s1/2 − 2p1/2 splitting (Lamb-shift) of these ions will be given. The accuracy of this new method is comparable to the most precise experiments available for very heavy ions (e.g. [1]), and is sufficient to test QED in strong fields up to the order of α2.
