We performed experiments with a sodium Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a 1D optical lattice and observed the coherent evolution of the Bloch states in the lattice. By adiabatically turning on the optical lattice we were able to put more than 99.5% of the BEC into the groundstate of the lattice. Starting from the lattice ground state other lattice states can be coherently populated when we subsequently manipulate the lattice. Using Bloch oscillations a convenient accelerator is demonstrated which is able to impart many photon recoils to a BEC wavepacket.
