We have investigated the 1s decay of free Mg atoms with a photoelectron- photoion coincidence method at the new U41-PGM beamline of BESSY II. As Mg is the first element in the periodic table showing a cascade decay for the 1s radiative transition, also the Mg 2p and 2s decay was investigated. With our final ion-charge resolving electron spectroscopy, an advanced version of the photoelectron-photoion coincidence method, branching ratios and transition probabilities were determined for the whole cascade decay.
The results are compared to measurements on solids and to calculated values.
