Anderson localization in atoms: quantitative statistical results — •Sandro Marcel Wimberger and Andreas Buchleitner — MPIPKS, Noethnitzer Str. 38, D-01187 Dresden

We present a numerical and theoretical investigation of the analogy between the driven ionization process in hydrogen atoms and the problem of charge transport in disordered solids. Starting from the prediction of the scaling theory of localization, we test whether there exists a single localization parameter for the hydrogenic system – such as the ratio of localization to sample length in the case of mesoscopic systems – which in a universal sense determines the statistical properties of the atomic conductance. Atomic conductance fluctuations are numerically observed in a wide regime in parameter space. We present for the first time comprehensive evidence of the qualitative agreement between the statistical properties of the atomic transport problem, and the charge transport through mesoscopic samples in the Anderson-localized regime. Our results for hydrogen deviate from the predictions made for solid states in the sense that the investigated statistical variables explicitly depend on the initial atomic state, i. e. on the effective sample length of our atomic system.
