The comparison of the transition frequency of an ion at two different
velocities measured by
collinear laser spectroscopy of an ion beam provides a test of the
relativistic Doppler formula and, therefore, the time dilation
factor γ. Possible deviations from γSR predicted by
the theory of special relativity are parametrized,
e.g. in the test theory by Mansouri and Sexl [2], through γ =
γSR(1+α β2+...).
Previous measurements at the TSR storage ring in Heidelberg used a beam
of metastable 7Li+ ions at β =0.065 .
The achieved total accuracy of 3 MHz (Δν/ν=9×
10−9), together with the ions rest-frame frequency [3], resulted in an
upper limit for α of 8× 10−7 [1].
Experimental investigations are presently being performed to further
minimize systematic errors in preparation of
a new improved 7Li+ experiment
at the TSR. Here the transition frequency is planned to be
measured at two finite, but sufficiently distinct velocities β =
0.065 and β = 0.029,
respectively, with an accuracy well below 1 MHz.
