Statistical properties of Auger spectra are considered for the first time. This is stimulated by the investigation of complex Auger spectra of free atoms as well as by the possibility to achieve a resolution no larger limited by the lifetime of the inner-shell hole using Auger electron-photoelectron coincidence technique.

The approximate formula for the number of Auger lines corresponding to the transitions between two configurations is obtained. The distributions of Auger transition probabilities and amplitudes have been calculated for the transitions 3p⁵ 3d^N → 3p⁶ 3d^N−2 є l. It is shown that the distribution of Auger amplitudes can significantly differ from the normal one, contrary to the radiative transitions where such assumption is usually made.
