We have studied the intensity ratio between singlet and triplet lines originating from the 3s3p5 1Po and 3s3p5 3Po levels of Ar III populated by a beam-gas interaction. The line intensities were monitored as a function of various projectiles acting on the Ar target (H+, H2+, He+, N+, Ar+). The beam energies were varied in the range 0.4 − 1.5 MeV. The fast ions were produced by a 2 MV Van de Graaff accelerator. The deexcitation light of the excited Ar ions was monitored in the VUV by a 1 m concave grating Seya-Namioka spectrometer equipped with a channeltron detector.
Statistically significant deviations of the intensities of singlet and triplet lines from simple ratios were observed. These observations indicates that the spins of the collision partners is an important parameter (in violation of the Wigner spin rule) which has to be taken into account for understanding the interaction mechanism.
Our experimental data will be presented and our results will be discussed in view of the existing models.
