Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) with pulsed dye or titanium-sapphire (TiSa) lasers has been established in our laboratory for ultratrace analysis of long-lived radiotoxic isotopes - especially plutonium - in environmental, biomedical and technical samples. However, for routine measurements these dye- and TiSa-laser systems are still rather complex and cost intensive. Therefore a new, compact, low maintenance RIMS-apparatus is being developed, which combines a commercial quadrupole mass-spectrometer (QMS) with tunable cw-diode lasers. The sample is atomized and autocollimated in an atomic beam source for Doppler reduction. In this way 3-step resonant exitation into an autoionizing state can be achieved with all cw-diode laser exitation. Thus isotope selectivity is obtained, adding to the overall selectivity of RIMS for ultratrace analysis. First applications with diode lasers and the atomic-beam-source-QMS-apparatus for ultratrace analysis of plutonium will be presented.
