Medical application of optical low-field magnetometry — •Georg Bison, Silke Schwarzer, and Antoine Weis — Department of Physics, University of Fribourg, Switzerland
We present an optical magnetometer which has the required sensitivity and bandwidth to detect biomagnetical signals, in particular the magnetic field generated by the human heart. The principle of the magnetometer is based on an optical-r.f. double resonance in an optically pumped alkali (Cs or K) vapour with phase sensitive detection. We discuss the design and performance of a hand-held device with two identical magnetometers operated in a differential mode.
