Molecule frame angular distributions of Auger electrons of homonuclear molecules are normally symmetric with respect to the atomic sites of the molecule due to the inversion symmetry of the system. However, if the resulting ionic fragmentation, following the Auger transition, breaks the inversion symmetry, we can expect forward-backward asymmetries. This has been demonstrated for the autoionization of valence electrons in O2 [1]. We find a similar situation in the decay of the π∗ resonance of N2 because of the predominant dissociation of the molecules into N + N+ after the Auger decay. Different angular patterns are presented for odd and even angular moments. Depending on the degree of mixing between the two types of partial waves forward-backward asymmetries of varying strengths are produced. The results are discussed with respect to recent experimental data for core excited nitrogen [2].
