Employing a crossed - beams - experiment, we investigated collisions between two identical, multiply charged noble gas ions X = Ar, Kr and Xe. We measured the total cross sections for charge transfer, X4+ + X4+ —→ X3+ + X5+, and ionization, X4+ + X4+ —→ X4+ + X5+ + e− for center- of- mass energies from 10 up to 60 keV. The cross sections show almost no energy dependence at absolute values of about 10−16 cm2. The experimental data can be used, for instance, to estimate particle losses in storage rings due to charge - changing collisions between the stored ions.
