Third order Stark effect on the hydrogen line intensity — • A.A. Kamenski and V.D. Ovsiannikov — Department of Physics, Voronezh State University, 394693 Voronezh, Russia

The factors determining the intensity of radiation emitted by an atom from the state |n⟩ to the state |n′⟩ depend on the electric field F. So the intensity dependence on field is also evident:

In n(F) =
nn4
3c3
dnn2= Inn(0)
1+Fβnn(1)+F2βnn(2) +F3βnn(3)+…

The field dependence of the frequency factor ωnn is rather easily derived of the Stark-effect data for the energy of initial and final states, (is known up to very high orders in electric field F). We derive a similar dependence for the matrix element on the basis of the Stark-effect data for the wavefunctions. The Sturm-series presentation for the Coulomb Green function enables one to put down analytical expressions for the wavefunctions, matrix elements and intensities of dipole transitions up to the 3-th order in powers of the dc field F.

The effect provides an additional spectroscopic information on the atomic structure which may be used in practice for optical diagnostics of dc fields exerted on atoms and to control the emission and absorption of light by atoms in field.
