Using Feynman’s path integral formalism the transition amplitudes of quantum-mechanical processes can be expressed using functional integrals which are difficult to handle. However, for atomic processes in the presence of a strong laser field these probability amplitudes can be expanded in terms of the contributions of quantum orbits which are a generalization of classical electron trajectories. The quantum orbits are complex as a consequence of their origin by tunneling ionization. Typically, only few such orbits give the main contribution to these amplitudes. In this paper, we will show examples concerning high-harmonic generation and above-threshold ionization. In particular, we consider elliptically polarized and bichromatic laser fields, as well as the presence of an additional strong static electric field.
