Polarization Study on the UV/VIS-Fluorescence of 2p-Excited Argon — •Roman Flesch1, Michael Meyer2, Arnaud Marquette2, and Eckart Rühl11Fachbereich Physik, Universität Osnabrück, Barbarastr. 7, 49069 Osnabrück, Germany — 2L.U.R.E., Centre Universitaire Paris-Sud, Batiment 209D, F-91898 Orsay Cedex, France.

The polarization of 2p-excited argon fluorescence in the UV/VIS regime is reported. The experiments are carried out at the high brilliance storage ring facility BESSY-II. Linearly polarized soft X-ray radiation from the U49-1-SGM monochromator is used to excite argon near the 2p-edge with a typical energy resolution of E/ΔE>5000. Dispersed fluorescence spectra are recorded after selective excitation of Rydberg states. Fluorescence lines are assigned to transitions of Ar+. The degree of polarization of the fluorescence lines is analyzed. Similar to previous results on 4d-excitation of Xe [1], polarization is discussed in terms of the alignment of resonant Auger processes that follow the primary 2p excitation. The results are compared to earlier work on time-resolved UV/VIS-spectroscopy of 2p-excited argon [2].
