Tuning the fragmentation of C60 fullerenes by collisions with highly charged ions — •O. Hadjar, J. de Vries, R. Hoekstra, R. Morgenstern, and T. Schlathölter — KVI, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, NL-9747 AA Groningen, The Netherlands
We have studied the fragmentation patterns of C60 fullerenes upon impact of multiply charged ions at keV energies. We find that there are mainly three ’tuning’ parameters which can be used to ’steer’ the fragmentation process. (i) the projectile velocity: for low velocities evaporation of pairs of carbon atoms dominates, whereas for high velocities a decay into many small fragments becomes more important. (ii) the projectile charge: with increasing charge formation of multiply charged C60 becomes the dominant process; (iii) the projectile atomic number Z: energy deposition in the C60 via electronic stopping shows an oscillatory dependence on the atomic number Z, which is reflected in the fragmentation patterns. Presently we try to exploit these features for the fragmentation of large (bio-) molecules.
