Cavity-QED with a single 40Ca+-ion — •Gerhard R. Guthöhrlein1, Kazuhiro Hayasaka2, Matthias Keller1, Wolfgang Lange1, and Herbert Walther11Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, Germany — 2Communications Research Laboratory, Kobe, Japan

The localization of a single ion inside an optical Fabry-Perot resonator provides the possibility to observe cavity-QED phenomena under stationary conditions, with a precisely controlled atom-cavity coupling. Using a linear Paul trap, we have stored a single 40Ca+-ion and coupled its S1/2 to P1/2 transition to the field of a medium finesse resonator. A localization of the ion corresponding to one tenth of the transition wavelength was achieved. Important experimental issues are the transport of the ion into the cavity and positioning it at the intersection of cavity and trap axis.

The present setup will be employed to deterministically generate single photon pulses [1]. A second application is single ion lasing, providing cw generation of non-classical radiation [2].
