The study of the process of dissociative attachment of electrons to molecules has a long history; the early swarm–type experiments appeared already in 1929. In this paper we report on the progress in the theory and computational methods used for the calculation of cross sections for inelastic processes in collisions of low–energy electrons with diatomic molecules achieved in the last few years. The calculated dissociative attachment cross sections and the dissociative attachment rate constants are reported for HF, HCl, HBr, HI molecules and their deuterated analogues. The calculations are based on resonance theory assuming that during the collision a long–lived negative ion electron–molecule state is formed. The calculated cross sections and rate constants are found in almost perfect agreement with the available experimental data indicating that the nonlocal resonance model represents the most successful approach to the treatment of inelastic electron–molecule collisions. Generalization of the standard nonlocal resonance model are discussed and new models described. Both quantum and semiclassical approaches to the treatment of the resonance molecular dynamics are considered.
