Quantum computers and multi-particle entanglement — •Hans Jürgen Briegel — Theoretische Physik, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München
The field of quantum information brings together fundamental concepts of physics and computer science, promising novel applications such as efficient algorithms and secure communication. Quantum entanglement is hereby regarded as a resource for both communication and for computational tasks, although this connection is not yet fully understood in quantitative terms. After a brief introduction into the basics concepts of quantum computation, we will discuss in some detail the system of qubit lattices where two-state particles are trapped on a lattice with an Ising-type interaction between neighboring particles [1]. A possible implementation of such a system has been proposed, using neutral atoms trapped in an optical lattice [2]. We show that this system provides a rich studying ground for both multi-particle entanglement [1,3] and for quantum computing [2,4].
