How does a strong femto second laserfield couple to more than one electron in an atom? What is the role of electron-electron correlation for this process and what are the mechanisms? New experiments adressing this question by imaging of the momenta of ions [1–3] and electrons created in the laserpulse [4] will be discussed. The observed structures in the ionic momenta [1,2] as well as the surprising correlated emission of the two electrons [4] give direct evidence of the validity of the rescattering mechanism. These findings for multiphoton double ionization are contrasted to the observations in double ionization by single photon absorbtion.
