Hydrogen bonding is of fundamental importance for structure and dynamics of molecular systems. This distinctiveness among chemical bonds is accompanied by exceptional spectroscopic properties. In the infrared absorption spectrum the OH-stretch vibration within a hydrogen bond exhibits an extreme broadening as well as a peculiar substructure. The broadening mechanisms of this vibrational band in the condensed phase are studied by photon echo spectroscopy with femtosecond infrared laser pulses. We separate with this four wave mixing technique homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening as well as spectral diffusion and coherent coupling of low frequency modes.
