Structural Changes in Polymeric Fibers During Spinning — •Jens Rieger — BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Polymer Physics / Solid State Physics, 67056 Ludwigshafen, Germany

The properties of polymeric fibers are determined to a large extent by their nano- and microstructure, i.e. by the fraction, size, orientation and arrangement of crystallites within the fiber. The aim of our investigations was to elucidate which structural changes occur within polyamide 6 fibers during the first steps of the spinning process: crystallization from the molten state, subsequent drawing, and relaxation at elevated temperatures.

The crystallization was examined online by means of wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) which allows to determine the onset and the evolution of crystallization. In order to study micro-structural changes in the fiber during further thermomechanical treatment we investigated fibers taken at different stages offline by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Whereas the differences between the fibers are small with respect to crystallinity, the respective SAXS-diffractograms differ significantly indicating major changes in the crystalline superstructure.
