The effect of different terminations (-CH3, -CF3, -OH, -SH) on the electronic and structural properties of thiol-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is investigated using various analytical methods such as grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXD) and reflectivity, low-energy atom diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM / STS). It is shown that the endgroup can influence the structural ordering and shift phase boundaries [1]. These effects are discussed in terms of the sterical constraints and the chemical interactions of the different endgroups. The impact of the endgroup on the charge distribution and the electronic transfer properties is investigated. It is shown that the change of the charge distribution at the endgroup
can cause a gap-like behavior and strong asymmetries in the charge transport characteristics. Finally, the implications for SAM-based heterostructures and adsorption on SAMs are discussed.
