Microspectroscopic investigations on the film growth of metal-organic charge–transfer complexes — •R. Fink1, U. Groh1, H. Ade2, and E. Umbach11Experimentelle Physik II, Universität Würzburg, Am Hubland, 97074 Würzburg — 2NCSU Raleigh, Dept.of Physics, Box 8202, Raleigh, NC27695, USA

DCNQI and TCNQ based metal-organic charge–transfer complexes are very interesting materials due to their particular transport properties (e.g., anisotropic conductivity, Peierls transitions). However, so far only very small single crystals were produced from solutions showing these properties. With respect to applications in microelectronics, thin films which can be microstructured, are preferable. We report on first microspectroscopic (NEXAFS microscopy) and microscopic (atomic force microscopy) investigations of thin films of Cu-TCNQ and Cu-DCNQI which were prepared by co-evaporation in ultrahigh vacuum. On inert substrates we find inhomogenous films with crystallites of 10 µm showing a preferred growth direction (stack direction parallel to substrate). In contrast, film growth on metal-covered substrates yields more homogenous films with different stack direction. These differences are most probably due to the stronger coupling of the molecules to the metal substrate and due to different nucleation processes (funding: BMBF, Fkz. 05 SL8 WW1 8).
