Probing the melt-crystallization of poly(ethylene-co-octene) by simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering experiments — •Michael Grasruck and Gert Strobl — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Freiburg, Hermann-Herder-Str. 3, 79104 Freiburg

Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) detects structures on two different length scales during isothermal polymer crystallization from the melt. While the density difference between crystalline lamellae and the amorphous regions are detected in the small-angle scattering (SAXS), the interchain distances are observed in the wide-angle range.

We report about SWAXS experiments on poly(ethylene-co-octene). The experiment shows that the SAXS signal, represented by the Porod constant, increases faster than the integral-intensity of the crystalline peak in the WAXS signal. This observation indicates that the formation and growth of the lamellar crystallites is a multi-step process passing through intermediate states[1].
