A special type of stereoselective metallocene catalyst opens the chance of producing a new kind of isotactic polypropene (i-PP) without further purification steps in a homogeneous process. Depending on polymerization conditions a great variety of PPs with different stereoregularities and molecular weight distributions are produced with different physical structures and properties. The amount of stereo errors in the chains of these PPs influence the degree of crystallinity, resulting in either semi-crystalline flexible thermoplastic polymers or nearly amorphous highly elastic ones. First results obtained with Synchrotron WAXS, DSC and SFM especially on elastic PP grades are presented. Investigations on isotropic samples in correlation with stress-strain measurements show the great potential of these novel polypropylenes as a thermoplastic rubber material. Results of strain-induced crystallization and properties of melt extruded samples are also presented.
